A Day in the Life of Houdini the Cat (as told to her owner A C Agnello)

Short story 1 Comment

“My day starts early. My parents, Mario and Annette, get up around three in the morning. I don’t understand why they do that but it happens most every morning.

Mario lets me out of the bedroom, and leaves the kitten inside. Hoover is a little pest, he always wants to play and sometimes I’m just not in the mood.

I have a few minutes alone in the semi-darkness. When I check in on my pet the mouse that lives behind the stove. He used to play with me but the kitten ruined that. When he played with it he almost killed the little fellow I don’t blame him for being a little standoffish anymore.

Next Mario comes out and plays with the dishes. Then he gets her tea, she’s spending the time in the bedroom reading out of the big book she keeps beside the bed. When he gets back to the bedroom to read too but he reads it on the computer. I think they are both crazy with all the time they spend doing click, clicks on the computer. I wish I knew what the two of them see in a book they call the Bible but both of them insist on reading some out of it each day. He keeps reading when she leaves the bedroom.

Annette comes out and plays with food. Uck, I’ve tried it a time or two and can’t understand how they could eat that stuff, but they do and act like they are enjoying it. They would be so much better off if they joined me in a bowl of dry chow. They’re dumb enough they insist on fruit and vegetables, bread and eggs.

I tried eggs once. I didn’t like them, I hissed at them and they both laughed at me, they were nice and tried to comfort me. I wasn’t afraid of the eggs they were just to slimy and wet. I was hissing because they were cold and wet.

She finishes cooking their breakfast and goes to get him. Well, finally they both come out to eat their meal while talking and laughing. When they finish they herd me back into the bedroom as they both come back to the room. You’d think I couldn’t take care of myself for a few hours until she comes out again.

Then she and I, sometimes all of us, are back in the room. I get my breakfast and a nap if the little one will let me. Mario leaves, and she sleeps.

When she wakes she goes to tend to the old one. Sometimes I go out with my mistress; sometimes I am stuck with the kid. After a few minutes she’s back and we’re in for a long day.

I look out of the window a while then I settle down for a nap. She sits by the foot of the bed doing click, clicks. I loose track of time, I snooze, or go out to the counter or the sofa for a change of scenery.

Later she goes playing with food again. I have the freedom of the house. I spend my time in different ways, but eventually we all come back to the bedroom and I go to sleep again. After all I need my rest. I prefer to sleep by her pillow.

If I don’t go in, I sleep on the back of the couch and when I’m ready to go in the old one opens the door for me. He’s gruff and he yells, sometimes he doesn’t open the door wide enough and yells when I hesitate about going in. But as angry as he sounds, he’s not angry.

So goes a day in my life. It’s a good life, one to be envied. My people give me the best food and spend time with me. They actually got the kitten for me, as if I wanted a little pest like that kitten. He’s so cute, I used to be the cute one.

They don’t understand why they don’t understand the joke they keep quoting is true. “Cats have staff.” My humans need to know their place. Staff can be let go they have to remember that.”

Lost!!!

“Somerset, oh Somm-errr-set! Come on, now Somerset. Just where has that puppy gotten to.” Randy mumbled under his breath. It had been nearly two hours since Somerset ran from the yard.

The door was left open a second while Randy was taking out the garbage, and the new puppy had taken that moment to make a dash out the door. “I made my mistake playing with that dog in the yard,” was uttered in total disgust. As the fire alarm, from the station at the end of the street went off and the fire-truck went out with the siren blaring. Somerset took off after it barking and howling.

Randy ran back inside, “Where are those keys, I think I dropped them on the desk last night. Found them!” It seemed like no time before the car was started, at first it was a race where the fire truck and pup probably went. No truck, no dog, nothing to do but drive around, looking for the lost dog calling his name, “Somerset, Somm-errr-set! Where are you boy?”

Randy looked as long as he could than had to leave for work. He was a copywriter for a small advertizing company. That gave him a fair amount of freedom but time had run out there was no choice except to go back to work.

The first thing he wrote was an add for Somerset:

Somerset: Lost Yokie Puppy
gray and tan mix
eight weeks old.
Reward offered!!!

This was followed by a picture of the adorable lost puppy. Randy got a hundred printed out. He held one in his hand and as he looked at it will I ever see Somerset again. “Ah well, it was a brief friendship!”

Randy still wanted Somerset back. The pup had won his heart with all the wonderful puppy antics. Somerset would play for hours with the paper grocery sack or the safety seal off the orange juice. A puppy was a lot like a child. Somerset had been named after his father’s dog. This Somerset and the one from his childhood memory were so much alike. Finally Randy searched his wallet for the phone number of the lady he had bought Somerset from. He called saying, “Mrs. Longhorn, I am calling to see if I can go on the waiting list to get another of your puppies the next time you have some up for sale.”

“Of course you can get another of Princesses’ puppies. Perhaps you should come get Somerset before buying another.”

“Somerset ran away about three weeks ago he left chasing a fire truck and I could never find him.”

“He showed up late last night, I had mislaid your number. I guess being so young Somerset came back to his mother. Why don’t you just come pick him up.”

“I don’t believe he made it to his birthplace.”

“Instinct.”

“I’m on my way!” and true to his word Randy rushed out to bring Somerset to his rightful home.
